Imagine being born into slavery, k right off aught else but being a slave. Your mother and father were slaves, your grand-parents were slaves, heretofore your great grand-parents were slaves. Thats all you knew. Then one daytime you were told you were free, no longer a slave. This is what happened in the little Caribbean island of Antigua. It happened on the 1st of August, 1834. The news of emancipation spread like wildfire. Slaves, now former slaves immediately took to the streets to celebrate their freedom and express their mirth and happiness. Still holding on to their African roots, the former slaves apply drums and whatever they could find to make their music, dancing through the streets. This went on for days, until they were too tired to celebrate.
Over the years this informal exultation happened around the anniversary of emancipation. This was until 1957 when the first official Antiguan Carnival was organized, in regularise to boost tourism. This festival replaced the Old beat Christmas Festival, adding inspiration with a splash of the Trinidadian Carnival.
Since then, the Antigua Carnival was essential into 10 days packed with music, dance and revelry, with more garishness and glamour than the first celebration of 1834.
